HiMON® Online Cable Fault Localization

Maximum network reliability

HiMON® Online Cable Fault Localization (OCFL) takes your cable monitoring to the next level - precise, efficient and ready for the coming decades. Costly and time-consuming troubleshooting is a thing of the past. You can detect breakdowns in high-voltage DC and AC cables online during operation and pinpoint the exact fault location within seconds.

Our monitoring system is designed for extremely long cable lengths between the sensors and supports AC and DC cables in the high and extra-high voltage range. It can be seamlessly integrated into both new and existing cable systems - regardless of the manufacturer. Data is evaluated locally and optionally also in the HiMON® Intelligence Cluster, which provides the operator and the service team with directly usable information - at any time and from any location.

Your Advantages at a Glance

  1. Real-time detection of cable faults during operation

  2. Targeted maintenance & fast repairs thanks to precise fault localization

  3. One-sided and two-sided evaluation enables multi-user and terminal applications

  4. Independence from GPS signals for evaluation leads to high stability of measurements

  5. Significant reduction in downtimes and high downtime costs

  6. Retrofitting for existing cable systems

Determining the propagation speed using fingerprint measurement
The propagation speed of the traveling waves in the intact cable system is determined during commissioning using fingerprint measurement. This value is stored in the HiRES® Locator and serves as a reference for subsequent fault location.

Fault location by evaluating the reflections
If a cable breakdown occurs, a powerful transient pulse is generated that triggers traveling waves. These waves propagate in both directions and are reflected both at the start of the cable and at the fault location. The HiMAG® high frequency current transformer (HFCT sensor) decouples the signal at the beginning of the cable. The HiRES® Locator analyzes the time difference between the two reflections and combines this with the stored propagation speed (TDR, Time Domain Reflectrometry) - the result: immediate, precise fault location. Optionally, a two-sided evaluation is possible, which improves the accuracy of fault localization.

Expert assessment
In addition to automated localization, further diagnostics are carried out using an expert-based evaluation as part of the HiMON® service contract.
