Setting new standards in medium-voltage testing: HIGHVOLT presents the WRV T 20/75

The reliability of power grids depends on the quality of their cables. In the medium-voltage range in particular, it is determined every day whether the infrastructure operates stably or whether disruptions occur.

HIGHVOLT is now launching a solution that addresses precisely where conventional testing methods reach their limits. With the new WRV T 20/75, HIGHVOLT is, for the first time, consistently applying proven technology from the high- and extra-high-voltage sectors to the medium-voltage sector—thereby creating entirely new possibilities for on-site testing.

Market debut – and already in use worldwide

The system was officially unveiled in early June at the Koopmann Energy Days in the DACH region. At the same time, the first systems are already in operation in the United States and Asia. This shows that the demand and readiness for future-proof test systems are clearly present.

The WRV T 20/75’s approach directly addresses the current challenges in the energy markets. At its core, the system introduces a key advancement: resonance testing with alternating voltage under real operating conditions—and thus a test result that could hardly be closer to reality. While other testing methods only provide a limited representation of cable insulation behavior, the system operates with actual alternating voltage, thereby enabling:

  • Realistic stress on the cables
  • Reliable detection of actual fault patterns
  • Well-founded conclusions about the condition of the insulation

Another key advantage lies in the combination of voltage testing and precise partial discharge measurement. This is precisely where resonance testing demonstrates its strength. The physically realistic stress increases the likelihood of actually detecting relevant defects.

Real-world results show:

  • System weight under 3.5 t
  • Compact design
  • Modular structure for various application scenarios
  • Mobile deployment—from trailer to container solution

This makes the WRV T 20/75 suitable for testing medium-voltage cables in a wide variety of environments, from urban infrastructure to remote networks.

The performance data also demonstrate the breadth of its application range: The system covers cables in the range from 6 kV to 69 kV, enabling applications from conventional medium voltage up to the lower high-voltage range. For HIGHVOLT, this is the next logical step: bringing innovative high-voltage testing technology to where it makes the biggest difference—directly into the grids of the future.
